Quarter Round

Build a temporary shelter in 6 steps

Function/Folly Design Competition  |  2017

Queens, New York
Design Prompt: Design a temporary shelter that can be assembled by two or more people in a few minutes.

Quarter Round: In 6 easy steps, and within minutes, Quarter Round transforms from an umbrella-like rolling package into a quarter ball shaped structure. Find yourself shaded from the hot city sun. Smell the sweet salt in the air and hear the leaves whistle from the light breeze. Quarter Round provides endless fun, sensory exploration and practical protection!

Combining the inherent strength with the age-old utility of domed structures and the whimsy of a universal play toy, quarter round brings together function and folly for a modern community park.

Quarter Round takes traditional designs mixed with modern aesthetics and uses sustainable materials to create an environment that is at home with the neighborhood, in step with the Park and in harmony with the natural surroundings.

But this is more than a way to build a structure. It is a method to shelter people, encourage use and inspire fun in one of New York’s most unique community resources.
