Replacing fear with comfort

Studio project brief: Design for a marginalized community.

There are over 300 nursing home facilities in NYC and more than half are rated “much below average.”

1/3 of patients in assisted living and nursing homes have touble bathing due to fear of losing balence, becoming short of breath, and being unable to control the water pressure and temperature.

This study suggests creating a “kit of parts” for three different mobile abilities. Transforming the bathing experience from fear to comfort.

Typical hospital bathroom: poor lighting, plastic and metal grab bars, temporary benches and seating for showering, cramped and difficult to maneuver

Disability in older persons occurs when there is a gap, mismatch, or poor fit between personal capabilities and environmental demand.

  1. Sit on custom ADA bath bench
  2. Turn on water using oversized grip joystick
  3. Bathe in comfort

Falls are among the leading causes of fatal injuries for seniors. Below is a kit of parts to assist the aging community while bathing. As their needs shift, so does the space.

By utilizing a simple “kit of parts” aides can adjust patient rooms within minutes to accomodate their ever changing needs.
